San Diego, Part Dos

por | | 0 comments

Not often does a gal get to visit the same beach twice in one summer.

Well, I'm that lucky girl!

I plan on at least one of each of the following:
  • fish tacos from a seaside grill
  • a shot of tequila with lots of salt and lime
  • using an entire bottle of sunblock
  • a belly laugh (or 20)
  • quality time with some of the best girls I know
  • some sand between my toes
  • bachelorette being embarrassed by our behavior;)
  • a double bloody mary
  • sleeping in!!!!!
P.S. This is my first day off in almost a month!
I'm so excited!

See you on Monday!

Memomena in Salt Lake City

por | | 0 comments

I think I'm getting the idea that nostalgia can be a dangerous thing.

Menomena played a show at Urban Lounge a couple weekends ago at the Urban Lounge.  Shug and I have had the pleasure of seeing these talented musicians play in Chicago, Boise, and a little old venue I adore here in Salt Lake City, Kilby Court.  Needless to say, Shug and I are SUPERfans of Menomena.  We have embarrassed ourselves (and our friends) countless times with our shameless adoration and need to be in the front row.  SO when we saw Menomena was booked to play SLC just a week after our return from our travels, Shug and I decided it was kismet!

While we weren't completely sold on their new album, it was Memomena!  We HAD to go.  This was a band that played in the background when the shackles of love were being soldered around both Shug's and my hearts.  This was a band that was playing when I decided to pursue a career completely outside of my educational background.  This was the band that blasted in the speakers of my car when I drove Shug to meet my sweet Grandparents for the first, nerve-wracking time.  This band kinda means a lot to us.

And this is where nostalgia can get a little tricky.  The performance at Urban was just, well, bland.  I'm blaming Salt Lake being the second-to-last stop on a loooong tour with Tu Fawning and the addition of another guitarist.  Three's company and four's a crowd, right?  The energy and snap these musicians used to convey so effortlessly was just absent from this performance.

And you know what?  Shug and I were totally ok with that.  Because this band has a few songs that are a part of our mixtape.  No matter what kind of so-so albums they create, they are already a part of what I consider to be the best album I will ever hear: the music I fell in love to.

Ramona Falls performs for a packed in crowd at Rontoms. Ramona Falls is the brain child of Brent Knopt; better known as one third of Menomena. Very low light video but a great performance. Be sure to check out "Intuit", the first album from Ramona Falls on Barsuk records.

Title: 1/10 Ramona Falls - Russia (HD)

Note: Wish you could see Paul on drums. Venue was so dark.
Apologies for the inconsiderate beings walking past needing to use to the restroom just about every five minutes. Most were loud, obnoxious and drunk. No offense.

Ramona Falls is Brent Knopf's first solo venture, but he has an extensive musical resume as part of trio Menomena. For the Ramona Falls project (named after a childhood hiking trail on Mt. Hood), Brent collaborated extensively with musicians in Portland and New York.

Some noteworthy collaborators include: members of The Helio Sequence, Mirah, Loch Lomond, 31 Knots, Talkdemonic, Nice Nice, Tracker, Datr, Dear Reader, 3 Leg Torso, and Matt Sheehy.

Ramona Falls debut LP "Intuit" was released on 08/18/09.

Guilty Pleasure #29 - Pedicures

por | | 0 comments

If you were to ask me to take $40 and light it on fire, I would argue with you.  If you were to ask me to use that same $40 for a pedicure, I'd have the appointment already booked.  But lighting money on fire and getting a pedicure are one in the same in my world.

I've already elaborated on my lack of disposable income and my crafty ways at still being able to engage in retail therapy every once in awhile, but, when it comes to pedicures, I REFUSE to bargain shop.  And that's also why, up until Bestest Best's wedding, I hadn't gotten a professional pedicure since my OWN wedding!

Why shouldn't you bargain shop for manis and pedis, you ask?  Unsafe pedi practices can lead to serious health issues.  Always look for a UV sterilizer or autoclave if you don't bring your own tools.  Whirlpool foot tubs are also a big no-no, which can harbor bacteria and fungus.  The tub should also be drained and cleaned with a medical grade disinfectant in-between clients.  Bargain shopping for pedis usually means a lot of these safe practices are left by the wayside to cut costs.

Sure, sure, I know we can all give ourselves a budget-conscious pedicure experience at home, but I, for one, am not a master contortionist with super-human flexibility.  And I have a super-wonky pinky toe that demands a perfect angle of attack to get some polish on the lil'bugger.  Plus, it's just nice to sit back for half and hour and be pampered, right?

All bets are off. No hay quiniela que valga.

Fourth of July Inspiration

A little 4th of July Inspiration for all your get togethers this week!

Fourth of July Inspiration

Fourth of July InspirationFourth of July Inspiration

two boards above found on gallery.weddingbee.com

The 4th of July is coming up and I decided I would create a few red, white, and blue inspiration boards for all of you who may be having backyard barbeque's, laid back family dinners, or fabulous parties. We have quite a few clients this weekend throwing get togethers who have enlisted The Hidden Garden to make a few floral designs for the festive occasion.

Fourth of July Inspiration

In designing a party for this day, you can either go for the classic motifs of red white & blue, fireworks, and outdoor barbecue decor- or you can get a little more classy and have a fancy American soiree with all the details. Either way we're all getting together with family and friends for various events and it's a great excuse to get your event designer ideas flowing...get creative!!

Title: Shooter Jennings - 4th of July

See Music Videos http://www.bvmtv.com/ that you CAN'T See on You Tube ! +Live Chat and Embed video codes!

The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument. He discovered guitar at 14 and rock & roll (particularly Southern rock and the loose-limbed hard rock of Guns N' Roses) at 16. Soon he moved from Nashville to L.A., where he assembled a rock band called Stargunn. Stargunn earned a strong local reputation for its live shows, and enjoyed a six- or seven-year run on the L.A. circuit before Jennings rediscovered his outlaw country roots and dissolved the band.

Shooter Jennings lived his first few years in a crib on his parents' tour bus. By age five, he was playing drums. Between tours, he took piano lessons. He started playing guitar at fourteen and sometimes played in his father's band. He and his father recorded a few things together when they happened to have some microphones set up and the tape recorder plugged in. At age sixteen, Jennings discovered rock 'n' roll.

As an adult, Jennings left Nashville, Tennessee to seek his fortunes in Los Angeles. He assembled and performed with Stargunn, a southern rock band whose sound he described as Lynyrd Skynyrd mutating into Guns N' Roses. Stargunn performed at local clubs for six years, built an avid following, and earned praise from the local music press. But the Hollywood party scene eventually began to bother him. He says, "I was posing as a rocker—a country guy trying to be something he wasn't."

On March 30, 2003, Jennings dissolved Stargunn and moved to New York City to spend time with his girlfriend and sort out what he wanted to do next. An unexpected gig at the House of Blues a few weeks later revived his creativity. He returned to Los Angeles to form another band, the 357s. The 357's, presently, consist of Ted Russell Kamp on bass, Coley Read on guitar (replacing original lead guitarist Leroy Powell, who left in mid 2007 to pursue a solo career), Gordon "Gordo" Hartin on pedal steel, and Bryan Keeling on drums. After six weeks in the studio, he completed his first solo album, "Put the "O" Back in Country". Universal South released the album in early 2005.

Jennings portrayed his father in the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line. He is the host of Shooter Jennings' Electric Rodeo, a two-hour weekly music show on Sirius Satellite Radio's Outlaw Country channel. Shooter's second solo album "Electric Rodeo" was released on April 4, 2006. Shooter released "The Wolf", his third solo album, on October 23, 2007. Karissa and Heidi ready to save the day!

Rebecca and Mandy join in.

I adore these pictures that Terry Way took of our team back in June. Karissa and I are blessed having a great support system in our Couture Girls. Rebecca and Mandy were with us at this private home wedding and Terry really captured the spirit of our team work that day. Our lovely Linnea was graduating from UCSC at the time these photos were taken so she did not get to climb aboard this vintage firetruck. Here is a cute picture of her in action at another wedding.

Title: Hayek vs. Keynes Sequel Sneak Peek at The Economist Buttonwood Gathering

On October 25th, an audience of financial managers and CEOs, politicians, central bankers and nobel prize winning economists at The Economist Magazine's Buttonwood Gathering were treated to an unusual experience: a live rap battle between John Maynard Keynes and F. A. Hayek.

Following a presentation by Nassim Taleb, the lights went down in the auditorium and Fear the Boom and Bust blasted onto the screen. This video picks up at the end of that special presentation, where Keynes and Hayek stepped onto the stage to give a preview of the next EconStories music video.

In the final new video, which will be completed in the months ahead, expect many more lyrics and an all new beat.

Lastly, Russ Roberts and John Papola took the stage with John Micklethwait, editor-in-chief of The Economist for a brief Q&A about the origins of FTBB and the resurgence of Hayek in the global debate over the economy.

Outdoor Natural Wedding Party

por | | 0 comments

We just had to snap a few pictures at this beautiful set up at the home of one of our clients this last weekend. It was a beautiful outdoor wedding party that perfectly complimented the whimsical nature of the setting. The arrangements were all made in organic and interesting containers using birch branches, tree stumps, & natural wood. The flowers were a textural mix of succulents, orchids, exotic leaves, thistle pods, fiji mums, lily grass, moss & tulips. Illuminated candles were added to create a romantic touch. Simply & naturally beautiful!
