This Week's Trip to Holland Christmas Sourcing & Ordering

por | | 0 comments

Jason & I go to Holland about once a month to check out what's available, to find new varieties, to source new growers, to keep in touch with new trends and to generally emerse ourselves in fresh flowers and plants.
~
We visit the wholesale market at the world famous auctions in Aalsmeer near to Amsterdam, the flowers are shown in height/size & colour order by varietal name.
~
We don't actually bring any fresh flowers or foliages back with us though we do place orders for future dates and take pictures of the products we're most interested in so we can place orders with our buyer on the auctionsThis Week's Trip to Holland Christmas Sourcing & OrderingThere are a huge number of aspirational designs to inspire weary floristsThis Week's Trip to Holland Christmas Sourcing & Ordering

Title: This Week in iPad - Akshay Kothari Co-founder, Alphonso Labs (Makers of Pulse news reader)

This week we have Akshay Kothari, Co-founder, Alphonso Labs (Makers of Pulse news reader). For more information, show notes, and an upcoming schedule, go to www.thisweekin.com.

Sponsor #1 -- Gazelle (3:00)

Gazelle is a service which will purchase your old or gadgets, video games, cell phones, laptops, digital cameras, PDAs, gaming consoles and cell phones.

News (8:15)

iPad Today -- Leo Laporte's TWIT.TV network will be launching a new iPad-centric show today which will be streamed live at 1:30 PM PT with co-host Sarah Lane. The show will be available later for download on TWIT.TV

Corporations Love the iPad -- Wells Fargo, SAP and Mercedes Benz are increasingly adopting the iPad as a business device.

iPad Cam Case -- A designer has developed a concept case for the iPad which would feature a rotating camera.

Mac Sales -- NPD data showed that Mac sales remained strong, despite concerns that the iPad would cannibalize sales of Mac computers.

Geeks Hate the iPad -- Andrew McAfee wrote an article on Forbes saying that geeks hate the iPad because Apple doesn't, as he believes, allow for open innovation on the device.

Sponsor #2 -- Print Magic (31:00)

"Print Magic" Wellala is also a sponsor of This Week in iPad. The application allows users to print to any Wi-Fi connected printer directly from an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Users can copy and paste text into the application for printing and users can also print images from the iOS photo library directly. Print Magic and Print Magic HD are available from the App Store. Host Lon Harris said on This Week in iPad that the app is "incredibly fast" and "works like a dream."

Guest - Akshay Kothari (36:00)

Kothari shared that when developing Pulse Reader, Alphonso labs, aimed at building news in a visual manner without focusing on providing the maximum amount of content. Kothari said the biggest pain point for users is the 20 feed limitations, which is done for memory management purposes. He added that Pulse News Reader would allow for more feeds in the next update and providing better organization for feeds.

Kothari said that in the future, news readers would likely no longer sort stories via source and instead users would perhaps share stories in social news clouds in which users could read news that their friends are reading. Kothari said that in the last several weeks that the further development of Pulse has been focused on improving performance of the application.

Harris mentioned the New York Times takedown request which got Pulse News Reader removed from the App Store temporarily. Kothari shared that Pulse included popular reads which many people were adding and that he thought the New York Times got upset because the application was pre-loading their feed. Kothari expressed disappointment that the New York Times went to apple instead of directly to Alphonso Labs and said that his company had a good working relationship with Apple.

Planet of the Apps and Closing Remarks (52:00)

Harris showed off his pencil and rubber band iPad stand and said that he would discuss how to build the iPad stand on next week's show.

Harris thanked the show's technical staff for their hard work on the show.

Borders

Barnes & Noble

Kindle

To close the show, Harris thanked Gazelle and Wellala for sponsoring the show and Matthew Paulson of iPad Weekly for being the show's official blogger.

Ruby Drama

Ruby Drama
I found the cutest line of dog collars for Rubes.
I decided to get her one.

It wasn't cheap.

Shug and I went to a movie this weekend,
and when we returned
Ruby was sweet enough to make us TWO of her collars.

She'd managed to chew her week-old collar in half.

Mind you her $1.99 collar is still perfectly intact.

I love my dog.

Crunching your wedding budget and making it work

por | | 0 comments

Photo from Martha Stewart

Budgets, budgets, budgets. Yes, Brides and Grooms To Be, I know you hate this part of planning. I get it. But as soon as that ring is on it needs to be discussed. Can I tell you how many couples come to me and Karissa without a realistic thought to the cost of the wedding. "I want my dream wedding, but I want to keep the cost down." or my favorite "We don't really have a budget". Darling, even Donald Trump has a Budget! So what are wanting to spend on this dream wedding? To some it's $30,000 others $100,000 and still others couldn't imagine spending more than $15,000. As a professional Wedding Planner, I have to remind myself that my clients have no idea what a party of this magnitude will cost. So the first thing we do, except for with our "Month of" client, is crunch those numbers. We want them to see on paper the "average" spent on each part of the event. Below is an example of where the money will go. This is a very generic example, but one that you can plug your numbers into to get an idea of how much you can spend on your reception- site, rentals, caterer, or your photographer.

Ceremony                              $500.00               5.00%
Fashion                                  $1,000.00            10.00%
Flowers                                 $500.00                5.00%
Hotels/Transportation             $300.00               3.00%
Miscellaneous                        $500.00                5.00%
Music                                    $500.00                5.00%
Photography/Videography     $1,000.00             10.00%
Reception                              $4,000.00             40.00%
Stationery                              $200.00                2.00%
Wedding/Event Planner         $1,500.00             15.00%

Totals: $10,000.00

We have our own software, but if you aren't a client of ours a great resource for planning documents such as a budget template is- http://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-planning/wedding-budget.html

OK, so now you have an idea of what you can spend. But lets say you have $20,000 and 300 guests. You fall in love with a site with a site fee of $3000 which leaves you with $5000 for the rest of your reception costs. You soon realize that the sit down dinner you envisioned is never going to happen. What to do? Here is my advice. GET REAL! 33 guests- $20,000 is not going to equal a traditional sit down dinner with a big cake and an open bar. Those insanely beautiful centerpieces you saw on your favorite wedding blog are going to cost 3x what you can afford. But you say you have to have it? You have to have what? What that Bride had and this Bride had. It is your wedding. You have your own personality, taste, style and yes- Budget. So listen up Bride's and Groom's to be! Sit down and make a list of what you really want on your wedding day. Pretty flowers, yummy food, a photo booth, a garden ceremony.... whatever. Then crunch the numbers. What you want is way over your budget? Consider some of these suggestions-

-Have a cocktail or dessert reception. No one says you have to feed your guests dinner (except maybe your Mom, but it is your wedding not hers).
-Have your wedding at Home, or at a friend or family member's home. Saves you the site fee and gives your wedding a more intimate feel.
-Have your Wedding off season, or on any day but a Saturday.
-Have a small destination wedding with just your family and closest friends.
and my biggest suggestion-

CUT YOUR GUEST LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't afford your wedding with 300 guests? Cut that list to 150 of the people you really know and love and Viola! That wedding is starting to look doable. Get out there and get creative. Make your wedding feel like the two of you, take care of guest comfort, and be REAL! It's your wedding, not the girl who's wedding was featured on that favorite wedding bog today.

Dont for get to rate and sub you enjoyed it!
Lyrics:
Where's your respect? (Where's your respect?)
Why bite the hand that feeds you
It's not over yet(not over yet)
Plenty more fingers for you to nibble
I'd like to see you get your teeth round this
I'm sure your jaw will sorely be missed

Not even salt can make your hands taste good
I'm still crunching your lifeline
Not even salt can make your hands taste good
I'm still crunching your lifeline

You do this every fucking time
No sweat (no tears) no guilt

You do this every fucking time
No sweat (no tears) no guilt

Not even salt can make your hands taste good
I'm still crunching your lifeline

Lifeline, lifeline, lifeline,
Blood fills your palms,
Lifeline, lifeline, lifeline
Blood fills your palms,
Lifeline, lifeline, lifeline
Blood fills your palms,

Where's your respect? (Where's your respect?)
Why bite the hand that feeds you
It's not over yet(not over yet)
Plenty more fingers for you to nibble
I'd like to see you get your teeth round this
I'm sure your jaw will sorely be missed

Not even salt can make your hands taste good

Not even salt can make your hands taste good
I'm still crunching your lifeline

You do this every fucking time
No sweat (no tears) no guilt

You do this every fucking time
No sweat (no tears) no guilt

Do this one more time and I'll bite your fucking fingers off!!

Title: Flower arrangements: How to create a fall flower arrangement

http://www.howdini.com/howdini-video-6658006.html

Bring the reds and oranges of autumn inside to create a beautiful fall arrangement. Floral and interior designer Rebecca Cole makes her harvest arrangement using branches and flowers.

How to create beautiful fall flower arrangements

Here's some ideas from floral and interior designer Rebecca Cole for turning branch arrangements into big and beautiful flower arrangements for a buffet or entryway:

1. Start by adding the tallest and most dramatic flowers. Delphiniums are a great choice. First, take off all the leaves on the stem so the water will reach the bud better and keep the flower lasting longer.

2. Cut the stem with a paring or pocket knife at a diagonal before placing the flower into your floral arrangement. You want the most beautiful part of the flower to be at eye level, so make sure the flower stem isn't too long.

3. Remember that the branches should be the tallest thing in the arrangement, taller than the flowers because that's how they naturally grow outdoors.

4. Add a second kind of flower to the arrangement: a less expensive lisianthus is complimentary to the delphinium. Again, remove any leaves on the stem and cut at a diagonal before arranging.

5. Next, add a kale to the arrangement. It's actually a vegetable, but opens up like a flower when you open up the head. Remove the leaves from the stem and cut at a diagonal. The kale stem is very thick so a paring knife should be used.

6. Finally, a flower with a smaller head creates a nice contrast to the big kale, long delphinium, and lazy lisianthus. The small petals of a carnation will create that extra little pop.

These floral arrangements should be about 5 feet tall from the bottom of the vase to the tops of the branches and will last about a week.
